Eiji Happo

Eiji Happo (永字八法 or えいじ はっぽう) is a set of techniques in Japanese Calligraphy (adapted from the Eight Principles of Yong in Chinese Calligraphy)  shown by the eight strokes that form the kanji for eternal, or Ei (永). By this notion, these eight strokes (or techniques) are thought of as the basis for writing all kanji characters:

    1. 側 / Soku (side)
    2. 勒 / Roku (bridle)
    3. 努 / Do (strive)
    4. 趯 / Teki (leap)
    5. 策 / Saku (whip)
    6. 掠 / Ryaku (skim)
    7. 啄 / Taku (peck)
    8. 磔 / Taku (split)
